Logline: In 1944 Nazi-occupied Slovakia, a resilient village midwife must shield her six children from the horrors of the Front Line while her husband risks everything to join the Slovak National Uprising.

Ashes of Courage is a grounded epic feature film that uncovers a harrowing, lesser-known chapter of World War II. Inspired by the true story of the filmmaker’s great-grandparents, the film explores the visceral struggle of rural survival and the unbreakable bond of family.

Synopsis

Deep in the mountains of Slovakia, Anastasia, a trained midwife and pillar of the Nová Bošáca community, leads a life of “rural resilience.” Alongside her husband Pavel, a grounded farmer with a quiet but fierce moral compass, they have built a sanctuary where conflicts are resolved away from the eyes of their six children.

In 1944, that sanctuary is shattered. As Nazi forces invade to crush the brewing resistance, Pavel is forced to flee into the forest to join the Slovak National Uprising. Left alone, Anastasia must use her wits and nurturing spirit to protect her children from a world that has turned to ash, proving that the greatest acts of bravery often happen behind closed doors.
